Collage Project: Betty Songer introduce traditional Danish Paper Heart Basket Weaving. Mexican and Latin American Art using Heart Images will be presented.

Materials – matt board, assorted papers (construction, watercolor, tissue, decorative), ribbons, glue/paste, sissors, stapler, acrylic paint (metalic, regular, glittered, assorted colors), brushes, water containers, palettes, paper towels, markers, pencils/pens, and envelopes.

Mixed Media Painting Project: Oil pastel with acrylic thin & thick.
Introduction to Indigenous Tarascan and Huichol Cultures and Images as inspiration.

“Homage to…” Painting Project: Artist Images as Inspiration: Individual Artists such as Botero, Tamayo, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Siquieros or Orozco. Or Folk Artists by culture such as Huichol, Tarascan or Aztec. Or by tradition such as “Mexican Duality Paintings”. Pick a work by particular artist, learn from it, be inspired by it in some “recognizable” way and move beyond that to make your own unique creation. These paintings will be submitted to the Carpinteria Women’s Club Art Contest.

Materials: 12 x 16” canvases, acrylic paint, oil pastels, brushes, water containers, palettes, paper towels, and artist info cards.

Nahua Guerrero Story Bowls – ceramic and wooden

Community Mural Project: Looking at the Nahua culture and their “story bowls” usually done on clay or wood, we will create a “story mural” on a flat surface divided into multiple sections – one for each individual participant – and then put the pieces back together.

Materials foam core, acrylic paint, acrylic paint, brushes, water containers, palettes, paper towels.

Fantastic and Surreal: Working together to build a Fantastic World!

Real and Surreal. Looking at Surreal and Fantastic folk and fine artists around the world: Mexican folk and the work of Gaudi, Dali, Chagall, Varo & more.

Materials:
Assemblage Project: Foam core, drift wood, found objects, clay pieces, glue, paint, and more paint! A group project.
Painting on Canvas Project: 9×12 canvases
Field Trip: Friday 9:30 am to 2:30 pm Destination to be announced. Will include travel and lunch.

Printmaking “in reverse” Project: Draw it, Trace it, Draw it in reverse, and Print it! – The Monoprint Process. Looking at what monoprint artists worldwide have done and remembering Anne Fraser’s watercolor techniques from June.

Day of the Dead Painting on Palm Project: Masks: Mexican Duality Paintings: The Nahua Indians of Guerrero, Mexico have transferred their skills of intricate painting on pottery to painting on paper made from the bark of trees. We will be… Painting on Palm!

Materials: Palm pieces, acrylic paints, glue, and feathers.

November:

Painting a Meaningful Gift Project: Universal and Regional Iconic Images: Circles. Birds. Trees. Flowers. Corn. Religious Symbols. Another look at Nahua, Huichol and Tarascan images plus of course the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Black Madonna.

Book Project: Each student participant will be given a “page”. They will choose the subject, layout, illutrations (drawings, paintings, photos or prints), text, etc. Ideas for subject include: Traditional recipes with illustrations of food, kitchen, chef, etc. Traditional clothing or hairstyles or customs. Ancestors. Places. Celebrations. et al. Book will be assembled & printed. Each participant will receive a book.
Pillar Project: All pages created for the Book Project will be mounted on community pillar in the style of Rodolfo Morales.
Dance Project: Elena Rios and her group will rekindle the joy of Danza Azteca. Ayacaxlis, shields and head-dresses made in 2009 will be used again.

January Special Trip – January 9th – 11 am to 3 pm – for both Dahlia and Camper Park Bellas Artes students. Travel by Trolley to hear local Mexican American Arturo Tello speak of his life and work as an artist and proprietor of Palm Loft Gallery: Walk to Carpinteria State Park Beach for lunch: Introduction to the work of Andy Goldsworthy: Following Andy’s lead students gathered materials from the sea shore, created and photographed their own environmental artworks.

January Special Event – January 25th – Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano – Bellas Artes in cooperation with UCSB Arts and Lectures hosts Nati Cano and his musicians @ Dahlia Court for lunch @ noon, followed by socializing and music. All Dahlia and Camper Park residents are invited. Betty Campero is organizing the luncheon – a BBQ.

The photo above is of a permanent exhibit created for the national Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City in 1964. This display honors the power of the totemic animal. Colbert’s Ashes & Snow Exhibit reminds us again of that power, and how it thouches our human spirit.
